American forests      : Haemogogus sp. or Sabethes sp.

African forests          : Aedes afrianus and Aedes simpsoni

What will you experience if you get infected?

You will not have any symptoms for about 3-6 days after you the virus enter your body.

The clinical characteristics include yellowish skin and mucosa (jaundice), bleeding (haemorrhage), and high albumin in urine (albuminuria).

However, mild infection will give you the following symptoms: fever, sudden headache, nausea, vomit, muscle ache (myalgia), stomach ache, nosebleed, reduced or weak heart pump, and mild albuminuria.

At later stage, this disease will affect your brain (meningitis), liver (liver failure), kidney (kidney failure), and may be fatal.

 Can it be cured?

As we know, this yellow fever is caused by virus, thus it is a self-limiting disease. Anti viral will not give significant improvement. The medication given will be aimed at alleviating the symptoms only.

  How to prevent it?

  1. Get yourself vaccinated against yellow fever before travelling to the endemic areas. The recommended time of vaccination is minimally 10 days before travelling. Why? This allows your body to build enough antibodies.

  2. Use mosquitoes repellent agents, and use mosquitoes net or cover most of your bodies while sleeping.

How often should I get this Yellow Fever vaccine?

You will have the immunity against Yellow Fever for 10 years! Do have the booster vaccine 10 years after.

Who should not receive this Vaccine?

  • Pregnant women.

  • Immunocompromised persons, due to HIV, leukaemia, lymphoma, chemotherapy, and steroid consumption.

  • Baby < 9 months old.

  • Allergy to chicken egg.

Any side effects after Yellow Fever vaccination?
